Typography is the core of design. Books and Booklets give a good designer the best chance to prove their mettle. Bulk Typography is not easy. The way one presents the information on a page and through multiple pages is as important to a book as
a good navigational scheme
is to a website.
With that said, like anything else that has the potential to get boring, a design has to find ways to make it exciting. I've always found that coming up with an interesting device
to be repeated throughout makes it a lot more fun for
me and the reader. Page Numbers are an excellent place to have some fun!

PASSport: The PASSport is an annual publication of the Performing Arts Series at Shepherd College. 1999 was the first year that a designer was hired to produce the booklet/direct mailer and it was our distinct privilege to be the designers to do it. Through our advanced knowledge of the printing process we saved PASS enough money to offset our fees and increase the print run.
This piece was also the only Design Piece accepted into the Studio 105 Annual Student Exhibition.

IHPA Veneer Standard: The IWPA/IHPA Product Standards are a fun problem solving exhibition as far as we're concerned. The problem is that the Board of Directors wants to produce great booklets, but they don't have the budget. Add to it the fact that the end-user are lumber industry types and you have quite the conundrum. They have to be creative, fun, readable, intuitive, and cheap.

IHPA Plywood Standard: This is a sister piece to the Veneer Standard. Again, we are faced with the same problems. The problem to solve on this piece was "How do we blow their minds this year?"
